Germany Tri-Lake Tour (Titisee, Schluchsee and Bodensee)

Paddle some of the best lakes in the Black Forest region of Germany and Switzerland. Black Forest villages like Freiburg, Titisee-Neustadt, Baden-Baden, Feldberg, Glottertal, Freudenstadt, and Todtnau are the places to go.

The beautiful landscape, historical views, and traditional lifestyle and nature will surround you. Arrive in Freiburg, travel to Titisee, then Schluchsee, and end in Bodensee. Enjoy the comforts of great hotels and restaurants while exploring the natural forests, rivers, and lake areas. After a day on the river or lake enjoy a stop at one of the many thermal springs and wellness spas in Baden Baden (my favorite), Bad Herrenalb, Bad Krozingen, Badenweiler, Bad Peterstal, Bad Dürrheim, Bad Bellingen and Bad Bergzabern. Titisee is the largest natural lake surrounded by high-altitude spa resorts with outdoor adventures, wellness, and relaxation hotels. Paddle boats are available to rent for the day.

The boat cruise on the lake is operated by an electrical craft. No gas-powered

boats of any kind are allowed on Titisee. Paddling along the shoreline there are some areas of forestry. There is a large campground on the south side of the lake. From here you can park the canoes or kayaks and take the ½ day hike up to the Feldberg.

The Feldberg is the highest mountain in the Black Forest. The Feldsee is a small glacier-feed lake located at 1,109 meters and is approximately 32 meters deep. Swimming is not allowed in order to protect a rare plant life species which is only found in this high mountain lake and nowhere else in Germany.

Then travel a short distance over the mountainside to the Schluchsee. The Schluchsee is the largest lake in the Black Forest region. It is 7.3 kilometers long and 1.4 kilometers wide surrounded by mountains. This original glacier-feed lake was turned into a reservoir in 1930 when a dam was built. Here you will find more locals as it is not as well known to tourists.

A major highlight that lies between the Schluchsee and Grafenhausen-Rothaus is the Rothaus brewery. Rothaus beer is sold throughout the entire area and now in the UK.

From Grafenahusen it’s a short trip through the region heading south to the Bodensee. The Bodensee also known as Lake Constance sits at the northern end of the Alps along the Rhine. Its shoreline borders three countries; Austria, Switzerland, and Germany. Although this lake is a heavily known tourist area for travelers; it is worth a visit for paddlers, hikers, and cyclists. StarkTours generally avoids touristy areas but the Bodensee can handle the crowds well.  A good example is that this area has 28 golf courses nearby with 270 kilometers of cycling trails and routes. Not to mention the shoreline for paddlers.
